Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a species native to East Asia (China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan) and is an important polyphagous pest in its natural habitats. It invades the areas it spreads to in a short time by creating a high population and poses a significant threat to agricultural production. In Turkey, it can cause significant quality and yield losses in many products, especially hazelnuts, in the areas where it spreads, especially along the Black Sea coast.
The adults and nymphs of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, which has a piercing-sucking mouthpart, cause damage by sucking on many fruits and vegetables. When the fruits start to fill, they are sucked and deformed insides with wrinkles and depressions are formed. Adults and larvae feed on ripening fruits, causing "stained insides" damage, which is important for export. Fruits damaged in the form of black spots and deformed insides fall off, but the stained insides do not. Thus, the pest causes both product loss (black spots and deformed insides) and the formation of sucked insides (deformed and stained insides), which negatively affects product quality, so hazelnuts cannot even be traded.
In our country, the spread of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, which does not have a long history, occurs with plant materials, vehicles, the flight of adults, and commercial activities from the provinces where the pest is present. For this reason, there is a risk of spreading to our other provinces, and it is necessary to determine the areas where the pest spreads and to pay attention to internal quarantine measures.
Since the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug prefers sheltered areas such as houses and warehouses to overwinter when the air temperature drops below 16°C in autumn, it is important to control it in winter quarters. For this reason, the population that will emerge next year should be reduced with chemical control to be carried out before the pest leaves the winter quarters between September and April. For this purpose, the places where the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is seen during the winter must be controlled by spraying with Kudos Ultra EC, the ONLY licensed product among biocidal products.
