Biology
There are many ant species ranging in size from 2-4 mm and in colors from black to brown, red to black. The winged ant species is 5-8 mm long, brown, and has two long wings. They build their nests close to water and food sources, and their routes follow this axis. Those seen in the house are generally due to worker ants foraging for food. They nest in cracks, holes, and flower pots along baseboards. They live in colonies. They cause salmonellosis and staphylococci infections.
Control Methods
Walking routes should be followed to find the nests and measures should be taken there. Commercially available pesticides and baits can be used, but the chance of success is low as the population is not fully targeted. A professional applicator should be consulted.
